Non-hockey post: A word on Barry

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I’m a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan but I can’t root for Barry Bonds. Not only has his contract been an albatross on the team (so has ownership decisions and idiot maneuvering from management…but it all centers around him), I can’t respect his achievements, even if we are in a “steroid era.”

I haven’t closely followed his chase even though I’ve been keeping up with the Giants through this dismal season (side tangent: I wouldn’t be so disgusted with the team if they just conceded to finally rebuild, not re-sign fan favorites from half a decade ago on the tail end of their career — no offense Rich, it’s not your fault), so after dealing with a bunch of random stuff tonight, I clicked on the news to see that he finally broke Hank Aaron’s record.

Well, I hope Magowan & co. are happy now. They got their SportsCenter moment, their moment in time, and now we can all move on and do what’s right for the team, not for their own egos or need for “history.” Please, for the love of Ray Kinsella, rebuild the damn team.

As for Mr. Bonds, I think Dale Murphy (my favorite player growing up along with Will Clark — hell, I even have a vintage Murphy Braves jersey in my closet) summed it up best:

“I mean, people are calling up and complaining, I’ve heard the last few weeks, that that he’s being treated unfairly. You know, life just usually isn’t like that. You don’t usually get treated unfairly. You usually get what you deserve.”

Sure, half the league may be juiced up, but it doesn’t mean that we have to celebrate them. When does NHL training camp start?

The story about a gentleman and two gardeners

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

I was reading Aaron’s blog and that infamous OSNews article today when the story came into my mind. So I had no other choice other than to dump it out here ;)

*********************

Two gardeners quietly worked on their garden plots preparing them for the winter. Meanwhile one gentleman was passing by. This person more than once used a goodwill of gardeners who gave him the flowers from these gardens that he presented his belowed girlfriend. More recently one of the gardeners gifted him a bouquet from 3 scarlet roses, 5 neat carnations and 5 charming tulips. Another gardener (on old friendship) gave him 2 most surprising lily of the valley with 16 small flowers on a stem apex.

And this time gentleman also visited his fellow gardeners. But they had no flowers for him today. There was a December and all flowers had already finished blossoming. Our gardeners was assiduously working on the ground to grow up new, finer plants in the following year. The gentleman was certainly afflicted, but probably so much that he began to behave completely unpredictable. Having forgotten that literally several weeks ago here he had been done much good, he offended gardeners. He told them that they are exhausted and they have neither flowers nor enough energy to grow up new ones. He also declared that he would go to the nearest flower shop and would buy there any flowers he want. He said two newest, most perfect kinds of flowers ever received in biological laboratories should be on sale there soon. Even allmighty genetic engineering was applied to grow them. Further gentleman hinted gardeners they understand nothing in cultivation of flowers and they need to go to laboratory and to learn from there. He told that the best and most highly paid experts work in those laboratories and gratuitous work in own gardens can never yield the same or better results in any way (not saying that without a laboratory backup it is plain impossible to grow flowers)! Thereafter gentleman left without saying a goodbye mumbling “no, they will NEVER grow SUCH flowers, never, never…”.

Gardeners glanced one to another and saw frustration in their eyes. During this one moment the former rivalry for the right to place their best flower on a table in a house of their lady-love was forgotten. And they was both desiring to console each other. Eh! - they said, sympathetically shrugged shoulders and got back to work. And this work soon took up all their attention - they forgot the gentleman, the insult in their hearts thawed out and their mind concentrated on that fine flower which they were going to grow up next year.

Lego Indiana Jones Trailer Debuts, Nerdy Giggling Ensues

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I wish I could tell you that this new Indiana Jones video game will be available for all the next-gen gaming consoles well before the May 2008 release of the much-anticipated fourth installment of the popular action/adventure series. But alas, just like the film, Lego Indiana Jones the Video Game won’t be released until summer 2008.

At this year’s Comic-con, Lucas Arts announced this addition to its popular Lego adaptation video games (Lego Star Wars won Toy of the Year from The Toy Industry Association in February 2006), in cooperation with developer Traveler’s Tales.

Gamers will be able to play through all three of the original Jones films as “the legend goes Lego.” And, if the trailer is any indication, many of the most classic scenes from the films have been plastic-isized—complete with comic double takes, screaming snake phobias, and ten-ton rolling boulders (made of hundreds of tiny, plastic blocks. Naturally).

Up with the Posties!

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Here’s the new Liverpool Indymedia feature, with thanks to Birmingham IMC, who I…er…paid tribute to:
Following failed talks with Royal Mail management, postal workers on Merseyside and across the country are taking industrial action against Royal Mail’s cost-cutting plans, which are based on the European Union Postal Services Directive. A campaign of walkouts has been planned by the Communication Workers Union leadership, spread over various sites at different times. Liverpool will be hosting a regional march and rally in support of the posties this Saturday, 21st July. The struggle continues

Two weeks ago, up to 130,000 postal workers took part in a 24-hour strike - the first in 11 years - to stop the Royal Mail’s cost-cutting plans, which the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said would only mean cuts in members’ pay and pensions, job cuts and more post office closures.
However, according to the CWU, the Royal Mail management were not really interested in meaningful talks on Wednesday, June 11th, and merely reiterated their previous ‘offer’ and refused point-blank to negotiate. In fact, chairman Allan Leighton did not even turn up for the meeting and simply joined via a telephone link. CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes commented: “We are consistently trying to negotiate with Royal Mail but, to be blunt, they have no interest. They refuse to take the dispute seriously – to the extent that Allan Leighton can only spare 45 minutes from his other commitments for a virtual meeting by conference call. The public will see through his half-hearted approach to stop disruption to the mails services.”The CWU said support for the initial strike among postal workers was “huge”. A CWU press release said “No Royal Mail services operated as mail came to a standstill with close to total support for the CWU strike across the UK. Postal workers in every area supported the strike in overwhelming numbers. This support was at a level of 99% in big cities and all the largest Royal Mail workplaces and over 90% in all other areas of the country.”
Once again, the Royal Mail management accused the CWU of “blocking modernisation” and “hurting the business and its customers with repeated strikes,” portraying them as the ones causing this dispute. Royal Mail chairman Allan Leighton said: “Yet again, the union has refused to grasp or understand the harsh commercial reality of the market in which Royal Mail now operates and the consequences for all of us if we don’t modernise - and do it quickly. Their decision to call another strike changes nothing and achieves nothing other than to damage the business and our customers and drive more of them towards the internet or to rival operators.” Further, Royal Mail claimed that, “as ever, it is willing to meet the union at any time,” never mind what had happened the day before.
Back in 2006, Royal Mail and the CWU had agreed that they would work together to tackle the impact of competition in the mail market, use government investment to introduce automation, improve efficiency, introduce innovation products and raise the value and status of postal workers’ jobs. Royal Mail, however, ditched the agreement, refused to negotiate a pay resettlement and insisted on unilateral imposition of its cost-cutting business plan with mass job losses and cuts to workers’ pay and pensions. Furthermore, the management has been deliberately misleading the public by claiming that the CWU want a 27% pay rise. The CWU insist they have never demanded a 27% pay rise. Royal Mail’s offer of 2.5% increase in pay is, in reality, a wage cut as it falls below inflation rates.
Strike profiteersAccording to the BBC, one of Royal Mail’s biggest rivals, DX, had offered to help Royal Mail make its urgent deliveries over the period of the strike. The company told the BBC it expected to gain about £10m of business as a result of the strike action. DX describes itself as “the leading alternative to Royal Mail for next day business mail services, delivering over 1 million letters and packets every working day throughout the UK and Ireland.” All this, of course, was not mentioned by Royal Mail when they reassured their customers that they had “well-developed contingency plans”.Since the Postal Services Act 2000 was introduced, over 1,000 post offices around the country have been closed down, paving the way for private companies to take over. There are further plans to close some 70 post offices in the near future and relocate the services into WH Smith stores. Since Royal Mail lost its monopoly status on post deliveries at the beginning of 2006, 17 private operators have entered the UK mail market, particularly in the more profitable business post sector. According to Royal Mail itself, the company has already ‘lost’ about 40% of its bulk mail business to private competitors, including recently a £8m contract with Amazon. Yet, operators such as TNT and DHL only handle the bulk transit between major customers and the main sorting offices, which is the easy bit, while Royal Mail is still expected to make the individual deliveries, but without the full amount of the postage.
But what can YOU do?If you’re not a postal worker yourself, you might feel like there’s nothing you can do. But there are many ways you can spread solidarity with the posties. Firstly, if you hear someone in your workplace or neighbourhood complaining about the inconvenience caused by the strike, put the posties’ side of the story, and tell them to expect a much worse service if the strike is defeated. Secondly, you can pass on your best wishes to posties in person (when there’s knock…ring…letters through your door), or by writing messages on any letters and parcels you may send. Finally, why not come along to the rally this Saturday, 21st July, starting from Myrtle Parade at 12.30?

PG Meet … Awesomeness :mg:

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Wow. what a meet. Pagalguy raises the entertainment value bar every year and the meet was awesome from start till end.
I was expecting real pagalpan so had slept well in anticipation of less / no sleep  . reached Gateway of India a bit early trying to find pguys here and there . met pendyal n LBHIC . I congratulated you both then but forgot to say good luck  . saw mahip doing offline mod duties who directed us to a group of people already arrived before us situated under the tree for protection from the blazing sun. slowly members started dropping in and our PG banner was up in the air which caught the attention of one very curious police inspector. after a bit of discussions , he left inteliigently and the banner was up again but a little lower  .
After munching on couple of McD burgers ,we got on the rocking catamaran/ ferry and as soon as we started , almost everyone was in front of it looking like stage diving any moment. some people just sat around enjoying the breeze. Reached our destination and being the huge group were deciding which bus to board . when the bus people instructed the next bus is like after 3 hours , we got distributed on 2 buses till our next destination. after a small doze , got off to board tum tum’s on the long journey to where we were staying. the place is really picturesque and calm until we all arrived to raise hell. after lunch and a bit of chilling talking to people , headed to the beach a short distance away for some beach soccer. some of the boys and girls decided to hit the water and get wet mtv grind style ( only the boys  ) . Then after multiple sessions of roaming around between the beach and our guest house ,the night started to fall and people started getting impatient and wanted the party on the beach started. but had to wait for sometime till estranged and gang could arrange for the all the important itenaries to arrive without which it would have caused a riot for sure  . soon began the introduction sessions. one by one , every member came down and introduced themselves and what PG meant to them. heard some great experiences and all has been recorded by our professional director grondie who kept on requesting everyone to stay near the light bulb but no body listened to him . The bon-fire had started to burn in full swing now.
after that , the music system was set by pranav and some tunes were played but people were very thirsty by now  . curtz did an awesome job being our resident bartender for night and sadly , no one even left him a tip. next time you are in town , a drink for you from me  the music got fast and people started to swing faster than gyrating arabic dancers. many decided to head towards the beach for moonlit beach walks only to return for multiple refills for the drinks . the beach walk was good fun and soon as time went by and the number of drinks people had by now had increased in multipe counts. skipped estranged’s skit as i had already seen it at PG HQ but heard this was much more interesting and hilarious than last time.
The looong moonlit beach walk for some of us had was just awesome. turned around and we realised we had moved far away from humanity and returned back to see very few people left on the beach and some still dancing around the alcohol cart and not the bon-fire… went back to our place to have dinner . everyone was tired by now so many chickened out and went to sleep and some us stayed up till the wee hours of the morning for some interesting conversations , guitaring and singing sessions , and some muscle flexing for entertainment purposes only.
finally decided to crash at 4.30 am only to be woken up at 6.30 am  . many had woken up with headaches n hangovers and some of us headed to the beach for early breakfast and tea. slowly people started waking up contemplating whether to go to the “blue water white sand beach”. pagalneha was the most enthu in the bunch and found some generous volunteers to accompany her . many decided to give it a miss and head to the beach for cricket and bike rounds ( thanks to generous ali ). props to eka and his team who got out for single digit runs and allwin hitting one four and the match was over before it started.
grondmaster distributed some gifts he had got for some other purpose ( the tee rocks man ). many had to leave early to catch their evening flights and so early lunch had already begun. so after the good bye’s , only 15 or so of us were left who had decided to head home later. on reaching the ticket counter for ferry , we realised the ferry service had shut down. apurv and I headed to the ST bus counter to find all the buses to mumbai were full . went to a tour n travel agency who somehow managed to book 2 cars for us and we got lucky otherwise we might have had to stay at alibaugh for another day. reached mumbai and people headed to their destinations.
Rock on Pagalguy.com and a final cheers to many such meets in the future

Four Hundredth Mile

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Roger Mitchell

I am 83 miles north of Indianapolis on I-65.
A few clouds are out and the corn stands
dead on its feet on either side of the road.
It is dusk and the light leaps up
to take its last look at the world.
It is September, early September, and the leaves,
though they feel the soft stroking of the air,
shiver slightly.
I am driving my four hundredth mile of the day,
alone now, and calm, the lights of the oncoming cars
beginning to sparkle in the dying light.
Huge flat-sided semis, as the night comes on,
pass like immense untroubled animals,
like the sides of houses in a flood.
How many times have I been here and not seen
the width of the sky, the slow curve of the landscape
going away, the tiny wire trailing after?

This is the place and this, undoubtedly, the way.
As much of the sky above as there can be,
as much of the earth beneath.
This is the place where the world appears
in its robe of night and day,
where the dirt road travels with us a ways
and then turns sharply along the ditch,
disappearing down interminable rows of corn.
This is the place where you can see forever,
where pure emptiness hangs on outspread wings
circling above a field.

The soul ranges everywhere and everywhere finds
what it needs, a stick, a fleck of matter on the tongue.
The bird at the top of the dead tree will fly
before I can see it, so I will see it fly.
The cow in the truckbed in front of me looks out
at the world and, if I’m not mistaken, sees it.
The car makes a steady wind-ripped thrum, the glow
of the dashboard rising into my eyes like dust.
I am somewhere between exits.  The promising sign,
“Vacancy,” flashes above trees in the distance.
I am in no hurry.  The only thing in front of me
is home, a few stars, and another night.
I have tried to love what I thought was the world,
but the world moved.  I will love the move instead.
